Confidence was the fifth novel that Henry James published, originally published for American journal Scribner's Monthly as a serial from August 1879 to January 1880. The text from these serials was then published in February 1880 by Houghton, Osgood, and Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Herbert Ruhm was born in Vienna and came to the United States in 1942.
